Really Bad Grocery Trip Under $40

I’m going to show you this week’s shopping trip so you don’t feel quite so bad when you’re sick and do a horrible job shopping or you have a stressful week and end up ordering pizza on Friday. Sometimes, things happen. This week, I had this ghastly virus that is running rampant through our entire county and I couldn’t even bring myself to leave the house until yesterday, when I made a very fast and very poorly planned grocery trip. I did stay under $40, but thank goodness for stockpiles. Without them, we would starve by Sunday!

* I bought Purina One Chicken dog chow for $16.99. (Not a bad price, but I let a coupon expire. This is the only food that is under $40 a bag that doesn’t make Sophie scratch herself to pieces.)
* Chew treats for $1.99 (Too sick to try baking dog treats…)
* Two packs sausage $2.60
* Workbook for the little guy $1
* Steak rolls $2.79
* French bread 79 cents
* Marinade $1
* Two soups $3.90 (Yikes!)
* Cough drops $1.59 (And if I could have gotten out of bed Saturday, I could have spent 50 cents a pack!)
* Note pads $1
* Chicken $3.99

Grand Total $39.52

If I didn’t still have some produce and a stockpile, we’d have a very weird menu! Anyway, I’m back on task and will be using my Walgreen’s rebate gift card and Register Reward to pick up some essentials, like milk, along with the $5 off $20 coupon that is good today and tomorrow.

    Aww..I can make you feel much better…even though I am an EXTREMELY frugal sort, with 6 kids still at home and livestock to feed, plus 3 cats and a dog…our grocery bill runs about 600-700 a month and then about another 150 for feed for hte goats and chickens.

    There, ya feel better now?

  2. Katelyn Thomas says:

    Marye,
    Much, much better. Thanks! Goat feed was out of sight two years ago and chicken feed was shooting up. I can’t imagine what it costs now. At least the chickens give you eggs, or at least I hope they do. Do you milk your goats?

  3. Marye says:

    yes we do. So we basically don;t buy milk, ricotta, etc. or eggs.

    With organic milk at over $6 a gallon it does balance out..but with kids with high metabolisms and being very active…sigh…

    Some weeks are like that. I hope you feel better soon.
