Shopping for Next Year’s Summer Wardrobe for Your Kids

Now is the time to hit the stores for summer clothes for the kids. However, just because something is cheap, it isn’t necessarily a good deal. This is how I decide whether to buy an item:
- Start by deciding on a price point. I pay $3 or less for shirts, $5 or less for pants and $4 or less for special items like swim trunks. Anything I spend that much on better be awesome - I tend to spend at least $1 less.
- Think about sizes. At certain ages, a child grows a lot and may go through two sizes in a year. I usually look for roomy clothes that are in next year’s probable size. For example, I bought 6/8’s and smalls for a current size 4/xsmall.
- Consider trends. That Incredible Hulk shirt may only be $2, but will your guy want to wear a shirt with the Hulk on it next summer?
- Look at durability. I’ve seen some very shoddy construction on things well under my price point that I don’t buy because the fabric will pill up or things will come apart at the seams. We like to pass things on in my family, which means a well made shirt may be worn by two or three different kids.
