All the lights, ornaments, beaded garland, holly, and Christmas decorations are beautiful and festive. The problem is, the decorations can be very costly. Here are some tips for keeping more cash in your wallet while decorating.

Look for pre-Christmas 50% off sales - Craft stores such as Michael’s, AC Moore, and Hobby Lobby frequently have select merchandise 50% off before the actual holiday. The sales change each week, so be sure to keep a watchful eye on sales papers or better yet, sign up for their emails.

Use coupons - Some stores have online printable coupons or coupons in the Sunday paper. Again, it’s important to sign up for emails from stores. This is usually where you’ll score the good printables. Also, check coupons.com. A few weeks ago, I was able to get a $5 coupon off Mr. Potato Head. Using the coupon, I only paid $.99 for the toy.

Shop after Christmas sales - This tip isn’t going to help you now, but it’s a great money saving tip. Each year, I try to put aside a little bit of money so that I can add to my collection. Some years I buy things for my village and other years I purchase things for my tree. Now that we have our own home, I’d like to buy a few things for the yard.

Look on Craigslist and Freecycle - Sign up for email alerts for Craiglist and Freecycle postings in your area. Many times during the holidays, people use time off from work to sort through things and get rid of things they don’t need. You can also post a wanted ad.

Make your own - There are so many cute ideas out there for making your own decorations. Martha Stewart and Better Homes & Gardens always have such great suggestions. There are many other sites out there as well.

Look at dollar stores - Over the years, I have found some nice ornaments and decorations (including Hallmark ornaments) in Dollar Tree. Things can sometimes be a bit junkier than in times past, but occasionally you can still find some treasures in there.

Put it on your Christmas wish list - When your family and friends ask what you want for Christmas, be sure to tell them some Christmas decorations. You might want to be specific though, so that you don’t end up with something hideous.

Be content - Realize that it’s not reasonable to have everything at one time. It takes years to accumulate the things you want. Be happy with what you have, try not to covet other people’s things, and have a simple and happy time.

What tips do you have for saving money on Christmas decorations?

Sunday I attended a baby shower and they had some really cute pacifier favors and pink confetti decorating the table. I thought the pacifier favors were so cute (and inexpensive) that I had to share them with you. These are made using white peppermint lifesavers, mini jelly beans, melted white chocolate, and ribbon.

Directions:

Unwrap your peppermint lifesavers and set aside.
Precut your ribbon and set aside. (You can use your craft store coupons to save money on ribbon.) The ribbon should be about four inches long.
Melt the chocolate. Put a little dab of melted chocolate in the center of some of the peppermints. [...]
Post from: Thrifty Mommy

You should do this on the back side of the peppermint so that the words Life Savers does not show up on top of the pacifier.

Place a mini jelly bean on top of melted chocolate in center. Set down on flat service to dry and harden.

While the pacifier tops are drying, attach the ribbon to the other peppermints (pacifier handles).

Using melted chocolate, attach pacifier bottoms to pacifier tops. Let them dry/harden.

These can be arranged on a table as a decoration, set out as refreshments, or placed into favor boxes for your guests.

I dropped by Target today and they have already clearanced their Christmas stuff 75% off! They have a great selection too. There were at least 6 aisles full at my local Target.
I have been wanting a new jewelry box, but after seeing the prices I decided to wait. I’m glad I did because I purchased one today for $7.50. I also got a new star for our tree for $5, rather than $20. They had Christmas pajamas and shirts 75% off too. I picked up some Christmas shirts for my daughter for $1.25 each.

Oh, earlier today I mentioned looking for toys on clearance. Target has begun to mark down their toys. I didn’t get anything because they’re not cheap enough for me yet. I’m looking for 50-75% off. lol

A few years we went to my brother’s house for Thanksgiving and I remember my sister-in-law had the prettiest cranberry decorations. She took a clear glass bowl, filled it partially with water, and had cranberries and floating candles in the bowl. It was pretty, colorful, and simple. Check out these other decorating ideas from Better Homes & Gardens.
