This month, the Lifestyles Channel blogs are talking about our favorite furry friends. I love pets, but I’ll be the first to admit they are not a smart choice for someone living a thrifty lifestyle. Even with spay/neuter certificates or shelter adoptions, owning and caring for a pet is pretty pricey these days. For me, though, it is worth the expense to have my rotten little Gus, mean girl Sophie and counter surfing Rocky. While they aren’t perfect, they are loyal and loving pets, with the added bonus of providing a slightly over the top home security system back up. (Seriously, Gus, you can let me walk past. Its just a little cricket. Rocky, that balloon doesn’t remind me of an armed robber at all. I think I can safely step through the gate.)

For a dog, Gus does have a pretty thrifty habit, though. He recycles my recycling into chew toys by snatching it from the bin before I get it to the recycling center. He also brings in rocks from outside to play with. A dog who makes toys from recycling and free stuff he finds outside is my kind of dog.

Rocky believes that no one should ever throw away leftovers and is always there to help you avoid wasting stuff. Sometimes he waits until you’re actually done with it…

Usually, Sophie doesn’t have time to be thrifty. She’s too busy bossing everyone around to have time for anything else. However, the other day, she informed me (at the top of her lungs at 2 in the morning) that we had a mouse, the cat was too lazy to catch it and she had to take care of the situation herself. So, I guess she’s pitching in by providing free extermination service.

Do you have a pet that does something thrifty?
