First Rebate Checks Deposited Today

According to Tax Girl, the first round of rebate checks will be deposited today, which is a few days earlier than originally promised. Based upon my husband’s SSN, it looks as though we’ll be getting ours next week.
I had originally planned to use ours to purchase a new bed for us (we’ve never had a new bed), but given my husband’s unemployment situation we may have to use it for bills.

Here’s an article about tax deductions that I thought you should read. Are you claiming all the expenses you are allowed? If not, you could be missing out on hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. Here’s a few tips that I follow:
Medical deductions. This includes money paid for doctor’s visits and prescriptions and it also includes all mileage to and from the doctor’s office and pharmacy. You’d be surprised how quickly the mileage adds up.
Educator’s expenses. Since I am a teacher, I know about this one. Teachers and teacher assistants can claim up to $250 they paid in books and classroom supplies.

File Your Taxes For FREE

The IRS free tax filing program is now available. There are income restrictions though. It would be beneficial to figure out your adjusted gross income before you start. Your adjusted gross income must be less than $52,000 a year to use the free program. The free program has changed each year, so be sure to read the fine print before you begin.

Reader’s Digest has listed 10 money rip-offs that you should be aware of. It is unfortunate that there are people that try to take advantage of us. Here is the list:
1. Child Identity Theft – Yes, there are actually people out there so greedy that they will steal a child’s SSN and use it for their own good.
2. The Latest Work-At-Home Swindle – These are people that want to wire money to your account and have you keep a commission. Most likely, anything that says “money transfer” is usually a phony.
