I just got back from the Grocery store and spent $27 on 5 gallons of milk. My family will go through that much milk in a week so I don’t worry about it going bad but i was amazed with how much milk costs. I got 2 gallons of 2% store brand milk and 3 gallons of whole store brand organic milk. FYI, my organic is only $2.99 for half gallon cartons versus the $4 a half gallon of the name brand.
How much have you paid for milk in the last week?

Recently I found that there is a recall for the 21.8 oz containers of Nestle Quick Strawberry Powder for small fragments of aluminum. The 2 product codes affected are “82255880″ and “82265880″. Look on the bottom of the plastic containers to see if yours need to be thrown out.

So I got a rude awakening this month. I had to go to my Kroger’s for a specialty cheese and found that their store brand organic milk is $.85+ less than what I have been paying. Usually, my Kroger is way more expensive than most so I don’t go very often. Well, that will be changing since I go through about 3 gallons of Organic milk a week between my 2 kids. UUGGHH!! I will be saving about $6 a week on milk now. YEAH me.

I managed to get away from the family for a little while last night and do some grocery shopping. I was shocked when I went to pick up a gallon of milk. The Food Lion brand milk was $4.09 for skim!!!!! This called for some research.

According to The Star-Ledger, the price paid to farmers will have increased 50 percent this year — driven by higher costs of transporting milk to market and increased demand for corn to produce ethanol. We are seeing the rising cost of gas affect just about everything we purchase.

University of Illinois dairy specialist Michael Hutjens forecasts further increases of up to 40 cents a gallon for milk over the next few months, and up to 60 cents for a pound of cheese.

So, what’s a Thrifty Mommy to do?

1. You could buy all your milk from a wholesale store such as Sam’s or Costco. I haven’t checked the price of milk at Sam’s lately, but last time I looked, I believe it was around $3 a gallon.

2. Water down your milk. Some people may think I’m crazy for suggesting such a thing. I actually did this for about a month because my son was drinking so much milk. I would buy whole milk and dilute it about 25%. He was still getting plenty of milk for his growth and development. (BTW, diluted milk is not good on cereal.)

3. Buy milk on sale. I rarely see milk on sale, but it does happen. When the sale comes, stock up!

4. Take advantage of milk promotions. Right now, my Food Lion has a promotion going on. Buy 6 gallons of milk and get 1 free. You have to have them scan your MVP card to get the coupons to save. With all the milk we go through, it won’t be hard to collect 6 coupons.

Please tell us if you have any ways to save on our milk spending.

I was so scared that my kids would have them. Turns out that my sister’s little girl has asthma. I only have one child so far so my next one might be cursed with more of my genetics but I am praying that they will continue to take after their daddy, who is as close to perfect as I can find. I never had food allergies, which is a blessing in disguise since I love to eat almost as much as I love to read. But my environmental allergies were awful! I’m sure my mom worried about leaving me with babysitters in case I had an allergy attack. Would they know what to do? Would they know all that I was allergic to?

Now there is a great new way to keep your kids safe and save money at the same time. Jeeto, a great new company that sells clothes, stickers, etc, brings awareness to the environment and allergies to the public in a visually pleasing way. Now, you can shop without guilt as a friend, Ruth, at Allergies.com has wrangled a 10% off coupon for you to try the products. It is a great way to let people know that your kids are allergic to milk or nuts or gluten without making the kids look like geeks (no offense intended). I love the idea and I also like the t-shirts. Now all they need to do is make a t-shirt that shows how allergic I am to housework J.
