You can also use them to contain pet waste and line all your little trash bins. Personally, we prefer buying tote bags and reusing them, over creating more landfill.
Here are some other options for recycling plastic bags and keeping them from taking over your home:

Cut bags into thin strips and use them for knitting and crocheting
Ditto the thin strips for a colorful carryall 
Make a wallet 
Make a dress
Make a rain jacket
