My hubby and I dropped by the local antique/furniture/junk store this week. We just never know what we’ll find. I have been dropping in there frequently lately because I was looking for something for my tv to sit on. I found a beautiful big dresser but it was $350. Ouch. I even considered it. After all, it would be a lifelong beautiful piece. Thankfully, we went back a few days later and found this entertainment center. We paid only $45 for it! I’m so excited!

The cabinet also has room underneath for our dvds and such. We plan to keep that television for only another year or two, so it’s best that we didn’t pay much for a tv cabinet. After we get a flatscreen for the wall, we can move this entertainment center to our bedroom to use as an armoire (since it has doors) or to one of the kid’s rooms.

What deals have you found lately?

Christmas is only three months away. You may be thinking, ‘Please don’t say it! Don’t bring up that topic. I’m not ready yet!’. We can’t shoo away the fact that Christmas will be here before we know it, but we can prepare. For many, money is tight this year and alternative plans need to be made. Here are some ways to cut back on your spending this year.

1) If you have young children, consider purchasing used toys and clothes for them or having a toy and clothing swap with friends. Young children don’t know if the item is new or used. They’re just excited to see a different toy.

2) Cut out some names on your list. This may sound horrible to some, but you don’t need to buy for every aunt, uncle, and cousin. I started practicing this tip a few years ago. Even though I was thrifty with my shopping, things were getting out of hand and the list needed to be shortened.

3) Host a party. Have a party for your friends and decide on something inexpensive to exchange such baked goods, ornaments, or a gag gift. Have everyone bring one item and then play a game to exchange. If you’re having a baked goods exchange, then provide bags or boxes for take home food.

4) Give homemade gifts. You’ve heard this tip for years and perhaps you think it can’t be done. Actually, there are so many nice handmade gift ideas out there now. From soap, candles, purses, cookies in a jar, hot cocoa mix, and more . . . you can find something to make.

Stay tuned to Thrifty Mommy. During the upcoming months, we hope to share some inexpensive gift ideas.

Just this week, I visited our local thrift store/Christian ministry. I was looking for jeans for my children. I just can’t find it in myself to pay $10-15 (or more) for a pair of pants when I know I can get several almost new pairs for that price. I did pretty well during my shopping trip. I was able to get 12 pairs of pants (mostly jeans) for only 12!

I was pretty pleased with the jeans and so were my kids. Here are some reasons that I like thrift stores.

6) I don’t have the guilt. I can’t force myself to pay $10-15 for clothing. And even if I did, there would be some major guilt.

7) Thrift stores usually give back to the community. The thrift store where I shop helps others in need with food and other necessary items.

8) No worries about wear and tear. I told my daughter this week that I don’t like to buy her new clothes. The reason is because she stains just about everything she wears. I can’t tell you the number of times I have put something new on her and been so upset because she permanently stained it. When I pay $1 for something, I don’t get so upset about stains.

9) I am able to give to others. When you’re only paying $1 for clothing items, it’s easy to purchase a few extra things for others. Since you’re already searching the racks, many times you’ll come across items that others you know can use. I try to remember the sizes that my younger cousins wear or my friend’s children. When I was shopping this week, I remembered to look for athletic pants for my friend’s son. She had mentioned duing an earlier conversation that he needed them.

10) Sometimes you get your money back. When I shop for used clothing items, many times I can get my money back for them when we’re done. Sometimes I can sell them at my yard sale or local consignment store for close to what we paid for them. It’s also easy to give them away since you don’t have much money invested.

Do you shop at thrift stores?

This week, I visited our local thrift store/Christian ministry. They sell donated items and use the money to help those in the community. Since it is time to begin swapping out the children’s summer clothing, I decided to shop for pants. No matter how much buying ahead I do, we never seem to have enough jeans. I just can’t justify paying $10-15 for a pair of pants.

You never know what you’ll find at a thrift store. This week, I was blessed with some bargains. I found 12 pairs of pants for my kids for only $12! That’s $1 per pair.

I enjoy shopping at thrift stores. Here’s some reasons I like them so much.

1) Shopping at a thrift store is like going on a treasure hunt. You never know what you’ll find. Sometimes you’re really surprised.

2) The items are unique. You don’t have to worry about seeing five other people at school wearing the same shirt.

3) You can find name brand clothing. I’m not one to sport a big name brand across the front of my shirt, but it is true that some brands hold up better than others. Some of the pants I found this week were from Old Navy, Gap, Children’s Place, and JCPenney.

4) It helps the environment. Shopping thrift stores keeps products from landfills.

5) Shopping thrift stores usually saves so much money! This is probably my favorite reason!

Do you shop at thrift stores?

There are tons of thrifty tips in the world, but when it gets down to it, the number one way to save is to buy less stuff; followed closely, I think, by save money on the stuff you actually need. Here are five good tips for buying less.

There are tons of thrifty tips in the world, but when it gets down to it, the number one way to save is to buy less stuff; followed closely, I think, by save money on the stuff you actually need. Here are five good tips for buying less.

Grab a basket: If you know you only need a few items grab a basket not a cart. You’ll be less likely to fill it up.

Shop late: Again, for those few item shopping trips, go to the store about 20 minutes before closing. You won’t have time to impulse shop.

Make a list then set a goal: Making a list before you shop is smart, but it’s really just a piece of paper. It’s not going to stop you from shopping for stuff you don’t need. A goal will though. Make a goal for yourself – try not to buy anything not on your list. No fair writing down excess stuff on said list before you go out though. I’m talking about when you need batteries and shampoo at Target and walk out with dishes, DVDs, and more.

Have a waiting period: On all big purchase and most small non-essentials. Shoppers don’t always stop and think, which is a major downfall if you’re trying o save money. A waiting period makes you consider and reconsider a purchase before you spend the cash.

Surround yourself with non-shoppers: Many of my pals in real life love to shop. Luckily I hate shopping, but I can totally see the allure of hanging out and shopping with other shoppers if you do like it. If you don’t have pals in real life who shop responsibly, check out thrifty forums, thrifty books, and thrifty blogs. It doesn’t matter if you surround yourself with live people non-shoppers or online pals – the point is that it’s easier to buy less stuff when you focus some of your attention on others who agree.

Anticipate future purchases: If you know that you’re going to need new fencing soon, you may be more inclined to spend less on the day to day impulse buys. Each month or so sit down and consider what expenses may be coming up soon.

Examine your actual need: Like I always say, ask yourself if you REALLY need a product before you buy. Say it out loud then actually consider the question.

How do you buy less stuff? What works for you?
