1st turkey - I know this one looks a little funny, but it was done by my daughter when she was only 16 months old. We made our own patterns for this one. We just drew the turkey body, cut out some feathers, and that little red gobbler thing under the turkey’s chin. What is that thing called anyway?

Happy Thanksgiving!
Thrifty Mommy wants to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving. We are so blessed to have you as friends and we want to thank you for taking the time to visit us and read what we have to say. I have been blogging for over a year now and am loving it more each day. I hope to do this full time eventually and want to thank all of you for encouraging me and welcoming Karen into the fold.
So from all of us here at b5media we would like to extend our deepest thanks for making us the best blogging network on the web. IMHO :) Now go and eat some more Turkey.
Thanksgiving day turkey follies
Ok, let me tell you about my turkey horror story. This year I actually attempted to cook not 1 but 2 turkeys for my church. We try to feed the rescue squads and ER’s in the area every year. I usually just cook a couple of turkey breasts in the crock pot but didn’t think it was appropriate as most people want the whole bird. So I began…
I rinsed the turkey and made sure I got the giblets out of the bird before I brushed it with butter and stuck it in the oven. I checked it after 2 hrs and noticed that I evidently didn’t empty the cavity so I tried to get the bag out with a fork. Instead, I just pulled the bag off the turkey neck that I didn’t even know was still in there. I was disgusted but had to laugh. Then I never would get it to temperature. But it had been in the oven an hr longer than recommended so I figured that it would be ok. After all, they had to reheat it anyway. So there was the first one done.
The next one was a larger turkey so I planned on getting up around 3:30 am and get it in the oven so that it would be ready to take tot the church this morning. So I preheated the oven and went to get the turkey ready to put in the oven. Then it happened.
My oven went out. I heard a pop and the oven wouldn’t work. I checked the breaker box and thought that all the breakers were on so I assumed that the oven was non-functioning. I packed everything up and headed to the church to use their oven at 4 AM. On the way out of the house, I spilled the juice from the first turkey that was done all over the kitchen floor. I could tell that my morning was going to be not so nice. But at least I had a house to cook in and a church to volunteer at. Many thanks have gone up on this day for the follies to come.
I got to the church and got ready to prepare the turkey. I actually got everything out of the cavity this time. I learned that lesson. So I put the turkey in the oven but I couldn’t leave the church. It would just be my luck to leave and set the church on fire. So I pulled up some chairs and tried to sleep in the kitchen at the church. Not much sleep occurred from 4:30 to 6:30, needless to say. The organizer of the event came in at 6:30 and I tried not to scare him but I did. He never expected anyone to be sleeping in the church kitchen at 6:30 in the morning.
The comedy of errors this morning was too funny. Turns out, I missed the tripped breaker and could have just flipped a breaker, put he turkey in the oven and gone back to bed. Why do these things always happen to me?!?!?!?!
Thanksgiving Day travels

How was your Thanksgiving? Ours was long. We went to my in-laws this past weekend and had a wonderful time with family. The only problem was that my 19 month old woke up both nights and wouldn’t go back to sleep. I was exhausted. But my mother-in-law, of course, put out quite the display. There was so much food to eat that we could have eaten for days on the leftovers.
Today, we called all the relatives and told everyone “Happy Thanksgiving”. But I will have to tell you the funny part later. We went over to a friend’s house and enjoyed some time with friends. As usual, we ate too much and are stuffed now that we are back home.
So how did your Thanksgiving go? Did you have the traditional or did you do something different? Let us know.

It’s Thanksgiving Day. I hope you all are having a great day with your families. Below are two funnies for you.
Today, let’s say a prayer for our troops that are overseas serving our country. Let’s pray for their safety, their morale, and for their families that are not with them. I am so thankful that we live in a free country.

Well, only one more day until Thanksgiving. I’m guessing that most of you have the supplies you’ll need.
I have one more tip for you before the big day. Cook whatever you can the night before . . . even the turkey.
Yesterday at work we had our Thanksgiving meal with the kids, parents, and grandparents. The night before, I cooked two turkeys in my roasting oven, sliced and picked them (which I hate), and then I took the meat I had and put it back in the roasting pan in the juice that was left. Today I just turned on the roaster and warmed the turkey. The juice made the turkey so tender! I was impressed.
Also, make whatever casseroles you can the day ahead. I usually make my sweet potato casserole the night before. You can get my recipe here.
Some of you may enjoy making all your food the day of the event. I think that making some food the day before will definitely cut down on your frustration and timeline and will probably help you to enjoy more time with your family.
Ok, here’s your funny for today. I hope you’ll come back tomorrow for another.
