How to make Vinegar smell better

We have talked at length here at Thrifty Mommy about vinegar and the benefits of cleaning with it.  The most common complaint is how badly it smells.  Then I ran across this article from About’s Frugal living on how to scent vinegar and thought I would give it a try.  I put 2 tablespoons of vanilla in my vinegar water and it worked!  Now I am loving it all over again!

Thrifty way to take the sting out of a jelly fish sting – Windex or vinegar

So my nephew got stung by a jelly fish this week at the beach.  He was really upset.  My sister wasn’t going to pee on his leg in front of anyone so she did the next best thing, she sprayed his bites with Windex.  Her version of Windex had ammonia in it and it worked like a charm.  Did you know that, once again, vinegar is one of the best ways to cut the sting out of a jelly fish sting?

Great mildew remover for thrifty people

Ever wake up to mildew and just want to cry?!?!  I have a stroller that a friend gave me that had been in her basement.  It had mold everywhere beginning to grow.  I found the recipe for a thrifty way to get rid of it and stop further growth.  It worked great!  Take a spray bottle and fill it with equal parts of water and white vinegar.  Spray  the spots liberally.  The acid in the vinegar kills the mold and stops growth.  Jsut another great way to use one of nature’s greatest cleaners, vinegar.

Frugal Friday #15: 10 Thrifty Sunburn Remedies

Seeing this picture makes me hurt.  Of course, it is better to prevent a sunburn than to treat one.  At one time or another, I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves vulnerable to the effects of the sun.  For moments like these, try these thrifty home rememedies.  Most of these frugal ingredients you probably already have at home.
 1.  Apply apple cider vinegar to the burn with a cottonball, or make a cool compress.  Keep the skin moistened.  This remedy will help prevent blistering and peeling.
 2.  Brew tea and refrigerate to cool.  Once it is cool, put it in a spray bottle and spray …read more

Vinegar 101 for sunburns

All my life, my mom has treated my sunburns with only one treatment, VINEGAR!  We all know how fabulous vinegar works.  I love it for multiple reasons.  But for sunburns, my mom would poor it over ice and wet a wash cloth with it.  I hardly ever pealed and the sting would be gone in just a few minutes.  I use to laugh at my friends who would always try to be mean and pop me on my burn but it wouldn’t hurt me because of the vinegar treatment.  Any time we go to the beach, I take a gallon with …read more

Thrifty Remedy for Sinus Infections

Remember that cold I had a few weeks ago?  Well, it developed into a sinus infection.  I really didn’t want to go to the doctor.  That would mean money out of pocket for the visit and the medicine.  I decided to look online first for some remedies.  I was surprised at what I found.

I visited the Earthclinic website and found that their #1 recommendation for sinus infections is organic apple cider vinegar.  They actually recommend taking it at the start of a cold to prevent the infection, but I decided to give it a shot.  If it didn’t work, then …read more

25 Ways to Clean With Vinegar

This post is for my mom.  She wanted me to write one about the many uses of vinegar.
It definitely pays to have some vinegar around the house.  I need to go to the store to stock up on vinegar and baking soda.  I’ve had a mustard stain that won’t come out of my daughter’s clothes.  I think I need to try some vinegar or baking soda.  Both seem to be amazing, inexpensive, and safe products.  Definitely a thrifty choice!
1.  Add 1/4 cup vinegar to laundry, along with the usual soap, to brighten colors and make whites sparkle.  This will also act …read more

Vinegar vs the diaper pail

I have to tell you that I am in love.  Don’t tell my husband.  He might be a little jealous.
You all know that there are a ton of ways to use vinegar to do everything from help you loose wieght to brightening up your home and making it smell better.  Well, lately I have been having a time with the diaper champ smelling a little.  So I put some hot water and a cup of vinegar in the bottom of the diaper champ and let it sit for an hour.  I came back and rinsed it out and voila!  It …read more
