The Best Fifty Cents Ever Spent

Puddle Jumpers

Three years ago my sister in law and I were shopping at Target when I spied a pair of rain boots on clearance - for fifty cents! They were about 3 sizes too big for my son, but I didn’t care. Fifty cents is fifty cents. My sister in law thought the pattern might be a little busy for a boy but that didn’t worry me. I had been trying to find a pair of “puddle jumpers” and these were a bargain I couldn’t pass up.

My son started wearing them immediately. He wore them to stomp in puddles or run around in a muddy backyard. He wears them to school on rainy days, and sometimes he wears them just because he wants to. Three years later my son is still wearing the boots. Tell me that isn’t a great fifty cent investment.

  1. We found a great ladybug pair for my 4 year old a couple of years ago .. like yours they were too big but she’s worn them constantly since! Last summer we found an owl pair that was way to big, but couldn’t pass up the Target clearance. They were unearthed in the summer “too big” bin last week and have been the only thing she’ll wear! The ladybugs are now the footwear of choice for our 2 year old! Amazing how much use $2 can get you!

It is great that you found such a great deal that worked out.

However, the general idea of spending money, just because something is on sale or because it is relatively cheap does not make for being simply thrifty.

@anon - True. Buying just because an item is on sale doesn’t make one thrifty.

Planning ahead and knowing that you’re saving for years to come - well that’s where the simply thrifty part comes in.

Thanks for your thoughts and hopefully next time you’ll share your name.
