When you’re trying to be thrifty, there’s always more you can do to save. Although my mom could have given them a run for their money because our family of seven spent even less on groceries, these guys are an inspiration and I’ve enjoyed following them in the news over the years. They share some really smart ideas and they all seem so happy and united in that family goal of living within their means. Thanks for sharing this.
I have read their book, “America’s Cheapest Family.” Interesting book. I agree with much of their info, although lots of it also just depends on how disciplined you want to be. Most people can’t be that disciplined. They are certainly amazing!
i read the book also and found i was doing many of the same things but for some reason it wasn’t translating into the same amount of savings! i disagree with shopping once a month- think of all the deals i would miss! i do plan but i leave myself open to those deals when i come across them.
please share more of what your mom did!!

I think that undisciplined people have a big problem with picking up extra stuff, which is why they’re saying once a month. I go shopping once a week and always am on the lookout for good deals to stock my pantry.
My mom cooked a lot of creative casseroles, canned produce for the winter and used it fresh in the summer and served mostly homemade snacks and gallons of iced tea between meals. This was back before feed was really expensive, so we also had our own chickens for awhile and saved on eggs and meat. (Although none of the kids would eat the chicken because we raised them from chicks and bawled our eyes out over every little rooster that got slaughtered, so the meat part didn’t work very well.)
