Increase the size of your windows if you can to allow more light and air to come in during the day and reduce the use of electricity.

Place one moderately sized light in the center of the room instead of having several smaller ones installed around the room to save on electricity. Choose the type of light bulb you’ll use based on energy efficiency and not on looks alone.

Walls don’t have to be of ceiling-to-floor height. If your kids’ bedrooms are beside each other, you can allow the wall in between both rooms to be a foot short from reaching the ceiling. This will allow them to use just one “night light” during bedtime and reduce electricity costs once more.

If you have advanced carpentry skills or you just like tinkering with things and becoming an all-around DIY man, take the responsibility of as much building duties as you can to save on labor costs. This will also allow you to enjoy a greater sense of achievement knowing that there were parts of your home that you truly built with your own two hands. But just be very careful as might backfire.

Shop and compare rates for building materials. Don’t depend on your contractor or architect alone. Do your own research and choose the one that will able to best suit your needs.

Consider using secondhand materials whenever possible. Used materials, however, are not advisable to use for foundational purposes because this may affect your home’s level of safety.

Purchase windows and doors that are already built with aesthetic value so you won’t have to spend extra on painting or decorating them.

If you are only going to build a reasonably-sized home then consider hiring laborers individually instead of transacting with a construction firm as the latter usually charges higher rates.

If it’s your responsibility to supply the necessary building equipment, make sure that you approach all the people you know and find out if there’s something you can borrow or rent before purchasing anything.

Having a two-storey house is much more expensive in many ways than a single-floor house.

Painting is a more affordable method of designing ceilings, floors, and walls, than using wallpaper or other decorative methods. Choosing a single color for paint is naturally more affordable than using various colors as well.
