Top 10 times not to shop

I was perusing my fave blogs when I came across an interesting fact from Pat over at Frugal Living. She has a post on shopping only when you are happy. There was a study reported by Fox News that said you spend more money when you are sad. HELLO!! Every respectable female knows that. when I was a little girl, my grandma used to take me shopping and it always made me feel better. Of course, we weren’t shopping with my money.
So it got me to thinking. Here are some other times when you should NEVER go shopping.
- When you are depressed. You tend to spend more.
- When you are mad at someone. 15 years ago, I bought an entire new living room suit to fit my short body frame because I broke up with a guy who was tall. I still have it and it is the most uncomfortable couch ever.
- When you are hungry. Your grocery bill will never be larger.
- When there is a good sale on stuff you don’t need. We frugal shopaholics will try to justify any buy if it is on sale. Even if we don’t need it.
- At the end of a season. Ever been at an end of season sale and bought stuff that you might use next year just because you got a good deal on it and then never use it?
- During grocery rush hour. This would be from 4-6 pm during the week, right before bad weather, or right before a major holiday.
- When the kids need a nap. I just refuse to go if I have to take my kids during this time of day.
- When you are trying to squeeze in too many errands. You will have a hard time focusing and then either spend too much money or miss an important item and then have to waste gas going back.
- When you just got a raise. Celebrate by going to a cheap restaurant. Otherwise you might pay to have a swimming pool or something ridiculous done.
- When you just lost your job. Once again, depression makes you spend more.
So there you go. My top 10 times not to shop. Stay tuned for the best times to shop. See you later.

You must like the tall guys. Oh wait, I know. . . We’re both so short that anyone is tall next to us. lol
OK, maybe it’t just early in the morning (we have been up for over an hour) but I must have missed the tall reference. Explain.
You broke up with a tall man and you married a tall man. I was inferring that you must like tall men. Then, I was cracking on both of us for being so short. Anyone must be tall compared to us.
ahhh! I get it. A little slow this morning
I agree with everything except perhaps #5. End of the season can work well a lot of times. A lot of items really aren’t season specific. Plus, some places don’t even have much in the way of seasons climate-wise.
As a Floridian, end of summer is a great time for me to stock up on lots of warm-weather clothes since I’ll be able to wear them almost year round with the exception of the occasionally cold spell. And in fact, I don’t have a problem buying cold-weather stuff in late winter instead of early fall because it doesn’t usually get cold until later in the season. Of course, I wouldn’t want to get a thick coat in April.
Also, I find that buying stuff later in the season helps me avoid trends that don’t have any staying power. Sure, the clearance racks are full of bad fads, but at least I’ve had time to see them in action for a while and form a fairly solid opinion of them — and have fun laughing at some of the other styles that fortunately didn’t make it.
I agree Meg. Without #5, I couldn’t afford to clothe my family. I love the 50-75% off, plus an additional 40% off at Belk. I can get J Khaki stuff really cheap for my little boy. Last year, in the fall I paid $2-3 for sandals for my kids. I got them several pairs that they’ll be able to wear this year.
I’m guessing Kelly was referring to people that don’t shop smartly, don’t make good choices as far as sizes and things they know they’ll use. I have on occasion bought some things that I couldn’t use, but I have gotten them so cheap that I was able to resell them and get my money back. You just have to smart about those end of the season purchases.
Wow! What a great conversation. #5 was in reference to buying clothes and then they not fit next year. That happens more times than I can recount for me and my sister. That’s all.
This list is right on. Oh man is it a bad idea to shop while you’re down. Not only will you act impulsively, but you’ll feel even worse once you realize what you’ve done!
