I've never held a yard sale myself, but I heard a couple of tips on TV yesterday.

~Put batteries in toys and electronics. People are much more likely to buy if they know it works.
~Price things to sell. They suggested at least half of what you paid for the item new...if not lower.

One thing I would add is to include the date of the sale on your signs, so people don't assume that it's an old sign that didn't get taken down. I do that a lot.

My friend has a yard sale every spring. The last two years her daughter has made sweet rolls and lemonade the night before and set up her own stand on the lawn. She has made quite a bit of money for herself, especially early in the morning. Many of the early birds leave the house without eating, and they're more than willing to pay a dollar for a quick breakfast that won't waste their valuable yard-saleing time.

Sarah: So true! I have stopped at some yard sales where the things smelled horrible, like they had been in a crawl space for 10 years.

I had so much stuff at my moving sale that I could not unpack it all. Surprising to me, people actually dug through and bought it. I did have it grouped alike though. I guess I did so well because it was a moving sale and not a yard sale and because of all the traffic on the streets. It was so crazy!!! I can't even begin to tell you. I probably had 75 people there at one time. I think I had 40 or so in my basement den at a time.

Love these tips! Another I would like to add is to make your items look as attractive as possible. Clean them up, arrange them nicely, and get clothing racks if at all possible. That way, your customers can view the whole article of clothing rather than have to unfold it off a table. Most people are visually oriented and if it looks like you have nice stuff for sale they are more likely to stop by.
