TV Turnoff Week :: April 24 – 30
You didn’t want to watch anything on TV this week did you? Because if you did, allow me a moment to remind you that this is TV Turnoff Week.
Organized by the culture-jamming organization, Adbusters; this week – April 24th – 30th – is the official week for yanking the batteries out of the remote and spending some time on yourself and those around you. From the Adbusters web site…
Don’t think you’re addicted to TV? Then why not prove it by going cold turkey for a week? You’d be surprised how difficult it can be to disconnect – and what a profound week of self discovery it can be.
This coming summer will mark two years since I went TV-less and I’m loving it. Even though I was a child who spent much of his youth sucking on the glass teat, I’ve found a wonderful peace from unplugging from that part of our culture and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to all. Plus it’s always fun to watch the expressions on people’s faces when you tell them that you don’t watch TV any more. Some folks seem quite shocked that such a thing is possible.
Are there any other TV-less folk here?

Nah, I’ll skip this event
We don’t watch much tv, being book addicts (2151 books in our library), but it’s nice to sit down after the kids are in bed and watch mindless tv, while reading (husband) and doing needlework (myself) and chit-chatting. Or watching a show together with the kids, a movie, or letting the wee ones build crap with their blocks while they watch Thomas the Train or Bob the Builder. They’re all wiggly tv-watchers too. It’s a shock if they actually sit still for longer than 5 minutes, before they’re up and running amok again. 
I couldn’t stand to just sit and stare at the tv without doing anything else though. And if other things are going on, we skip the tv watching. Don’t even bother with taping shows to watch them later. Life really has gone on without catching every episode of our favorite shows. heh
I would love to be TV-less. Hubby is the one addicted to the thing. I can’t wait to tell him that it’s TV turn off week. We regularly come around to the whole discussion about getting rid of it. When we were first married we didn’t have one. I love the atmosphere of no tellie. In fact we just had the discussion again the other day and he has had it on far less that usual. I just don’t know how he’d go giving it up completely these days. I think it’s sad how dependent our culture has become to it. Great topic.
I went TV-less 15 months ago and goodness I LOVE it. It meant giving up my satellite TV subscription(only way to get any TV this rurally). I now read 5 books a week, love the peace and quiet, sleep better, and have lost 10 pounds. What’s not to like!
I will admit that I watch four shows every week. Desperate Housewives, Family Guy, The Office, and My Name is Earl. Thats it. I do not have cable so the kids really do not watch tv here because there is nothing to watch. We rent movies for them and that seems to do it.
