What People Spend on Food

I was Stumbling a bit this morning and came across this post - What People Eat Around the World.  It shows many families around the world standing around a week’s worth of groceries. What I find so interesting about this post is not necessarily the amount of money families spend, but what they do with the money. For instance, would the family of 4 from North Carolina still spend $341.98 on food each week if pizza, chips, soda and fast food weren’t part of their diet?

This pictorial reminds me that saving money is all about choices. I’m assuming the above mentioned family is on the go a lot because their grocery bill is all about convenience. By comparison, the family in Egypt spending $68 and change on a heavy on the veggie diet, probably has someone at home with more time to prepare meals.

The grocery bill is something we all struggle with. It reflects our lifestyle. When it’s time to make changes in our budgets, the grocery bill is usually the first thing to suffer.   It’s all about choices.

We spend approximately 500.00 a month for groceries, toiletries, and school supplies. With a large family you can’t afford to eat fast food or junk food..I t costs us over 40.00 to go to McDonalds, for example, and an evening of BOUGHT pizza will set us back $60.00
I think that alot of people get used to buying things rather than making them..when making htem is healthier, cheaper, and doesn’ take as much time as one would htink.
We don;t buy milk or eggs as we have goats and chickens, but we do not have meat animals, and did not have a garden this past year.
    great post!

Wow, that table is amazing. We spend less but there’s just the two of us. I do notice that our bill goes up when I’m more busy. Not by too much because there are few pre-made foods we like. But like instead of making soup we buy or instead of making spaghetti sauce we’ll buy. Both are cheaper to make. I think that our bill is also lower because we are so boring. Cedar is like me and likes rice, veggies, fruit, bread that kind of stuff. He does like fruit snacks — but you can make those in a solar humidifier, it takes a while though. I’ll have to check out that link. This is an interesting post.

OH MY GOSH! I thought you said one month! I just got back from the link and it’s per week! That is insane. Over $1,000 a month for food. Holy. Ok Now I have to link your post. Wow. I am stunned.

  4. I love this book. I think the idea is to show what the typical family spends on. I think is normal for most families to order in, drink soda and buy a lot of prepackaged food. I think the prices may be a little inflated, though. I used to eat like this when I lived in NYC, but I didn’t spend even close to that amount! And goodness! The Mongolian table is so small!!

  5. $500 a week is insane!!!!! We don’t spend that in a month! And look at all that junk food. My goodness. I’m in total shock. How can people afford to do that?

  6. Oops, it wasn’t $500 a week. I saw Marye’s comment and got the numbers mixed up. Still over $300 a week is way tooooooo much!

I spend 350.00 a MONTH with a teen and a 20 year old and myself.
I wish I had that to spend weekly. That would be a God Send especially here at the Holidays.
