WOW! How much should milk cost

January 27, 2009 by kellys

I just got back from the Grocery store and spent $27 on 5 gallons of milk.  My family will go through that much milk in a week so I don’t worry about it going bad but i was amazed with how much milk costs.  I got 2 gallons of 2% store brand milk and 3 gallons of whole store brand organic milk.  FYI, my organic is only $2.99 for half gallon cartons versus the $4 a half gallon of the name brand.

How much have you paid for milk in the last week?

$3.15/gallon @ Publix. We don’t get organic, but all their milk is added hormone free.

That’s nice. We unfortunately don’t have a publix. I hear there are great deals to be had there.

Dang girl – where do you live/shop?

My Aldi’s has it for 2.89/gallon and Walmart is 3.08 – but that is not the hormone free organic. The organic soy milk I get for my boys is less than $2 for a half gallon.

We went through 8 gallons of milk in 8 days (family of 8)

Woah! I don’t buy organic, but I buy 2 gallons for $3.99 at Costco.

  5. Tami says:

Some of our stores are that expensive. Ingles has a gallon for $2.88 this week (but is usually $4). Publix is $3.19, Walgreen’s is $3.19, Walmart is $2.88. So there are cheaper prices to be had. My family drinks 5 gallons a week too so I shop around.

  6. kristin says:

I spend close to $4 a gallon for organic milk.

  7. kellys says:

My walmart has 2% regular milk for $3.89 a gallon but their organic is $4 a half gallon. Kroger’s has the organic the cheapest in town with their gallon milk being comparable to everyone in town.

I am very picky about my milk. Some of them just taste funny to me. I only buy Target’s Archer Farms milk. I get the 1/2 gallon for $3.44. Sometimes it’s on sale for $2.99.

I know it’s a lot, but it’s worth it to me.

  9. Julie says:

I buy fresh raw milk from a local farm for $6 a Gallon. I’ve seen Organic Valley Gallon for a bit more than that for a Gallon at Fred Meyer (WA state) I’ve seen our Cheap store Winco have only 1/2 Gallons Organic brand milk for almost $4 for a 1/2 gallon only! RE: taste, I’ve run into that too in the past. I learned that sometimes the cows got into a batch of weeds if they have access, that usually changes the taste.

$2.19 at our produce store here in the Suburbs of Chicago. That’s a store brand skim milk.

  11. tanyetta says:

$4.59 for 1/2 gallon of Lactaid Milk.

I CRIED the day WIC cut me off.

    I seriously CRIED. :(

  12. kellys says:

Is $2.19 for a gallon or half gallon?

  13. Quacklynn says:

$2.19 a GALLON! It’s at our Springbrook market.
    Tastes great!
They only sell dairy, deli and produce.
Actually at Caputo’s an “Italian-Style” grocery, it’s 1.99 a gallon if you purchase 10.00 in other grocery!!! So once I buy my deli and produce it’s no problem!

  14. kellys says:

Quacklynn, I would totally buy $10 worth of stuff to save that much off my milk bill. Lucky you!

I used to buy lactaid… but switched to light silk soy milk. It’s only $2.49 (sale) $2.79 (reg) at target. Plus you can usually buy 2 half gallons for 4.99. A lot cheaper than the lactaid milk… plus you’ll get used to it… it has a better flavor imo.
