Give a Dog Minus the Actual Dog

No, I haven’t had too much eggnog. You can give someone a dog without actually giving them the dog!
Pets Alive, a no-kill animal shelter in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, has been rescuing animals for more than 35 years. Their GiveADog program allows you to give the carefree gift of saving a dog’s life without any of the feedings or walks.
Here’s how GiveADog works: After your gift is made, each recipient receives a thank you card in the mail, and they get to choose a dog from among many waiting to be rescued. Once the choice is made, …read more

Merry Christmas from Mary Emma at Parenting

May you and your family enjoy a joyous Christmas Day with good health and much happiness in 2010.
This is one of those days that children anticipate eagerly.  When you’re a grandparent, you’ve experienced this holiday in many types of celebrations with various family groups over the years…from childhood, newly married to new parents, parents of teens, then grandparents of youngsters who, too, evolve over the years.
Christmas, in its many forms, produces a family bond and many memories.  Record yours in a Christmas Journal to share with family and future generations.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Unusual Holiday Traditions

I thought it would be a neat thing to post the unusual holiday traditions we might have just in case someone likes the idea and wants to start it for their own. began our family tradition in a very unusual way and it has stuck with my family, I think the kids may continue the tradition but not all of them. This shows me that each person takes a little something they learned through childhood with them but alters it somehow.
For example: Growing up we never opened gifts until Christmas day, sometimes though we’d be allowed to open one …read more

Christmas Tree Disaster

This is just a fun little video for your Christmas Eve — a sweet little dog who knows he’s done something wrong!
It’s funny to me that dogs do this. Though my dogs are pretty small there have been times where they’ve damaged something or done something they know they shouldn’t (Honey hates the rain and thunder, and will avoid going outside to do her business at all costs when there’s a storm, if you catch my drift), and before we’ve even discovered what they’ve done, they’ve got the ears turned downward, the poor puppy dog eyes, and the tail tucked.

My Cat’s Resolutions for 2010

Choco is busy lounging about on wrapped Christmas gifts right now, yet he did take a quick break to share his resolutions for the new year.

My Cat’s Resolutions for 2010 (in his words):
1. Stop being afraid at the veterinarian’s office and hissing at the nice doctor.
2. Become friends with fishy the Betta. (So, I can eat him.)
3. Warm to the idea of sharing my domain with another cat. (Maybe.)
4. Give up on trying to eat carpet, string, floss and anything plastic. (Just kidding, I can’t.)
5. Vomit only on easy-to-clean surfaces like tile instead of carpet. (I sleep on the carpet.)
6. …read more

Are Pregnant Women Too Exposed?

You’re proud of that expanding belly.  You have new life there and are excited over the prospect.  You want the world to know.
So…you wear the tightest tops and jeans so everyone will know you’re “popping.”
However, is this in good taste?  Would you look more attractive in a flowing top that enhances your joyful state rather than produces a second skin?  There are…or used to be…lovely maternity dresses (an almost unheard of word these days of raggedy jeans), blouses or ample tees giving an elegancy to pregancy that’s missing in the fashion world of tight tops and below the belly bottoms.
Or is it “old-fashioned” to wrap …read more

Presidential Pup’s First Snowfall

A lot of fuss has been made about the First Dog Bo Obama’s first snowfall this past week, and for good reason: Dogs and snow are a lot of fun to watch!
The presidential pooch, a one year old Portuguese Water Dog, romped around the grounds of the White House with reporters and photographs capturing his every move. He played fetch and took breaks to investigate the white stuff.
Are you or someone you love a Bo fan? Check out some cute stocking stuffer and gift ideas!

Teach Your Kids to Respond to Emergencies

Every year people are lost because others did not know how to help, don’t let this be you. Teach your children today how to respond if there is an emergency near them
It is important to teach your kids when and when not to call 9-1-1. Share with them reasons they may call and make sure they know that this number is not something to joke around about. No calling just because they get grounded, etc. My son did that when he was 5 or 6 years old, his preschool teacher only told them to call 9-1-1 when they got in …read more
