But somehow the ashes make me feel close which I think really helps….the only thing I worry about is whether the ashes hold me back, that I am not letting go ?

The key for him was that he didn’t want there to be any feeling of having to look after his grave that is why he wanted to be cremated. He wanted people to remember him alive rather than go to a grave and remember his death.

I think that is what I want to…for me cremation brings some finality….if that makes sense?

In fact writing this I remember him saying why not use my ashes as cat litter….it would be nice to be useful!!!! ….it makes me smile as I can see his smile now and makes me remember his love of life

I couldn’t let this pass without throwing in my 2 cents. I’ve heard about coffins that reflect one’s personal interests, and it will be interesting for archeologists in the future when they unearth them.

Michael was cremated, but he wanted a viewing before. I rented a coffin and paid for a liner (a requirement) for his cremation. He was a practical and frugal guy, so I think he would have appreciated the rental. I think it was important for his family to see his body in order to accept the reality of his death. My plan (and his original wish) was to scatter his ashes in a favorite provincial park in Canada. I knew that he was disenchanted with the park when we last visited it (a couple years before his death). He was leaning towards having his ashes scattered with mine when I go. Now I’ve got his ashes in the entertainment center (positioned between his stereo speakers, so he can still enjoy his music.) He might not be enjoying it as much, since I’m playing more of my music now. I really feel comforted having him at home, and I wasn’t sure if I would. When the funeral director delivered his ashes to my home, I thought at first that I’d made a big mistake. But it turned out to be a good decision. In 1989 I visited Bryce Canyon in Utah. It made such an impression, that I wanted to be there for eternity. I’ve told everyone since, that I wanted my ashes scattered at Inspiration Point. Michael loved Bridges of Madison County, so he wanted to be blown to the wind with me. I hope that happens.
