Belief is the Friend of Grief

The reality of bereavement is that we are shaken to our core, our beliefs can be shaken, our belief in the goodness of life can be shaken. You all know how I love quotes to help us think about the future, well Anne Lamott has a wonderful quote to help us
“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: You don’t give up.”![]()
Grief can stop us in our tracks, stop us from living because of the guilt that we feel….but in reality giving up is no choice. Giving up on life, on our beliefs is NOT the answer. As the quote says, it is about keeping our belief alive that as long as we do the right things, live a good life then happiness will come…

I collect quotes and have several notebooks of the ones I’ve jotted down over the years. Giving is up isn’t the answer, despite the voice in my head that continually nags me to. Yet I guess I still have some measure of hope – or at least hope for hope, if that makes sense. Grief does stop us in our tracks, as does guilt. ‘Guilt is the mafia of the mind’ – I can’t remember off hand who said that, but it’s true.
I hope you’re doing well,
