Facing Death

Death has always scared me, as a child I just comprehend what happened. I think when people have died around me the fact that death scares me makes coping with their loss more difficult because I fear for them.
Last night I was watching Desperate Housewives and Edie died. She said something that stayed with me
“Its not hard to die when you know you have lived”
The reason why is that it reminded me of Dad dying. He said on his third to last day when I asked him if he had any regrets
“Why would I ? I have lived the most wonderful life, had the most wonderful family – when I go to sleep I will have so many
memories to keep me warm.”
Maybe we should not fear death, we should fear not living?

Anna, your father had a lovely way of expressing himself. I thought that before when you’ve quoted him. My mother said something similar (not quite as eloquently):”It’s been a great ride.” And my dear Michael had no regrets. He really did embrace life even when his body was failing him. He used to quote some philospher (I’ll have to find out who said this): “Life is a present that so many people do not unwrap.” He believed in ripping the paper off the gift and reveling in it.
Mary – do you know Dad and I were never close in life, I mean hugging etc, we were in thinking and personality….but there isn’t a day I don’t miss him…he in so many ways was my guiding star…and I never knew until he was gone…
