There are people who act like fools when they hear that a widow has suddenly come into money wheter it's substantial or not so. I've heard advice from so many people and like you, I have one person whom I trust to help me. It's so important to find the right person or you can end up paying for it in the end. Besides I would rather give everything up and lkive on the street if it meant that my husband was still alive!!

Thanks for the links. When my husband died I was left with a large stock portfolio that I was just not interested in nor capable of managing. So my lawyers told me to interview financial advisors. With the help of some friends in the business I set up 5 interviews.

My husband's good friend who is a savy investor sat with me at each of the interviews. I interviewed big firms, smaller firms, and a financial planner. My reaction to each was different than our friend's. What I found is that each talked down to me, like I was a stupid woman who was inheriting this and I needed their help to understand what to do. Well, it was my pleasure when I got to tell them that I have an MBA in Finance but not the interest or time to follow the market regularly.

In essence, I hated them all. It wasn't just their condescending attitude but also each one made a comment about their kids and being a dad. Here I am a widow who lost her young husband suddenly and they are talking to me about being a dad????? Dopes, each and every one of them. They didn't understand my needs, it was all about wealth management. They were cocky and condescending and I hated them all.

By talking to people and lawyers I found the perfect advisor for me. My husband knew her as well and they would often talk about his investment thoughts. This pleased me because I knew she understood his plan. Also, she is a single mom raising 4 kids, she understands me and my needs. If one of those men had said to me, "I know I don't understand your circumstances but I can help you make it better," I would have felt satisfied. Instead they came in with their boilerplate presentation and just sickened me.
