Widows Quest

Mum brings a smile

I spent the day with my mum yesterday. Since dad died, mum has struggled emotionally and physically. The garden which had always been dad’s domain, so working with mum (Well, mum managing and me doing thewater-lilies.jpg work of 30 people!) brings back wonderful memories.

It is also great to be in the company of someone who understands the pain of grief and who you can talk openly with about your feelings. I think the physical work also helps as it gets the blood flowing and you feel brighter.

The interesting point is that when I left her she looked 10 years younger – it just shows how human interaction really helps your emotional well being.

Hi , i have just read your piece and think it is lovely.
My dad died a few years ago and as my Mum lives in Bournemouth and me in kent, I do not see her as much as we would like. You sound like you have a good relationship with your Mum. I do believe she will have a closeness with your dad in their garden.

Thanks Sandra. I have to admit losing dad brought us closer. I promised dad that I would look after her and that has helped our closeness. A pity it needed grief but I wouldn’t swap my relationship I now have for anything. I wish I lived nearer as I love 1hr 20mins away and so I understand the issue you have.
