I thought that rich people were all greedy, and that most of them had probably sold their soul to the devil in order to attain their wealth. I assumed that rich people were conniving miscreants who took advantage of others. I assumed that corporations were evil, because it seemed to me like they always used clever marketing and subliminal advertising to coerce people into buying their products. Rich people who inherited their wealth seemed lazy to me.”

There are days when all of us wonder whether the pain is worth it, when we have no fight left in our body, when we cannot face waking up the next morning….

When that happens it is overwhelming and difficult to deal with, you know there are things in your life that “should” be making you happy, you know that you “should” be grateful for what you have….yet our concentration is on what you haven’t got.

I have never found the right words to comfort myself or others in this situation – I would love to hear your ideas?

But if that is how you are feeling then just hold on to life as tightly as you can…..if you take your own life, then all you do is pass the pain from your heart to others. All you do is remove another good person from the world , who brings love to a world so much in need of as much love it can find.

Life may seem meaningless, life may seem not worth it…..but as my Dad once said “Don’t give in to the pain, the pain is there so that you enjoy, really enjoy the good times. Pain will not destroy you, only losing the capacity to love. So when you feel down, reach out to love…...loving is the one thing that pain cannot survive”

I think he was right. He didn’t mean love in a purely sexual sense but love in the desire to make all those around you happy, love in the sense of bringing value to the life of others.

….And hold on tight to the knowledge that one day, one day you will be so grateful for hanging tough in those dark days.

I am a huge cat lover, they give me a sense of comfort – they give their love unconditionally and always there when you need a cuddle. Looking after them has given me a purpose on those days when I could not find a reason to live. So I smiled when I saw this article in The Sydney Morning Herald about Oscar

“OSCAR the cat makes his grand entrances just as life is about to leave.A hop onto the bed, a fastidious lick of the paws, then a snuggle beside a nursing home patient with little time left. Oscar’s purr, when keeping close company with the dying, is so intense it is almost a low rumble.”He’s a cat with an uncanny instinct for death,” said David Dosa, assistant professor at the Brown University School of Medicine and a geriatric specialist. “He attends deaths. He’s pretty insistent on it.”

In the two years since Oscar was adopted into the dementia unit of the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Providence he has maintained close vigil over the deaths of more than 25 patients, nursing staff and doctors say….When death is near, Oscar nearly always appears at the last hour or so. Yet he shows no special interest in patients who are simply in poor shape, or even patients who may be dying but who still have a few days. Authorities in animal behaviour have no explanation for Oscar’s ability to sense imminent death. They theorise that he might detect some subtle change in metabolism – felines are as acutely sensitive to smells as dogs – but are stumped as to why he would show interest.”

When death comes having someone there to care and be there, is wonderful – for some Oscar is their comfort.

Oh I do envy that. It must be great to have that comfort. I often fear that the reason that I don’t see him is because my love isn’t as great as it I believe it to be…then I realise that each person is different. Each person deals with grief in their own ways – many through humor. It is not about love, it is how your body and mind cope during the grief process.

I think having a place that you can call your own, that you can go and still feel somehow you are together is wonderful. If you haven’t a memorial, then what about where you first met, your favourite place, a special place…anywhere that brings the memories flooding back.

Fear is something that we all suffer - fear of going out, fear of loving again, fear of how to cope, fear of the future. I came across this quote on a Lou Tice newsletter:

Fear is something that we all suffer - fear of going out, fear of loving again, fear of how to cope, fear of the future. I came across this quote on a Lou Tice newsletter:

“I am Fear. I am the menace that lurks in the paths of life, never visible to the eye but sharply felt in the heart. I am the father of despair, the brother of procrastination, the enemy of progress, the tool of tyranny. Born of ignorance and nursed on misguided thought, I have darkened more hopes, stifled more ambitions, shattered more ideals and prevented more accomplishments than history could record.

“Like the changing chameleon, I assume many disguises. I masquerade as caution. I am sometimes known as doubt or worry. But whatever I’m called, I am still fear, the obstacle of achievement.

“I know no master but one; its name is Understanding. I have no power but what the human mind gives me, and I vanish completely when the light of Understanding reveals the facts as they really are, for I am really nothing.”

Fear is something that if we leave will control us and our thoughts. The first step is to acknowledge the fear, be honest with yourself….that is the first step to learning to control the fear. After acknowledging them, you need to understand them – at that point, you will start to control the fear, rather than the fear controlling you.
