Last Friday we held our monthly widows support group on the internet and I have to say it was wonderful. On Friday I was not down but feeling a little numb, grief does that every now and again to you, but when I heard the voices of other widows suddenly I felt warmth, I felt energised, I suppose I felt …well, not alone!

So what did I take from the hour we spent talking about our grief, our fears and our hopes for the future?

The difficult balance we all face between holding on to memories and letting go of the past.

The importance of family and friends.

How grief can be hard on us physically but even harder on our subconscious.

How plans can help you focus on the future

Our conversation gave me much to think about, and I will post more about it during the week. My hope is that we can grow the widows quest support group and help others to get through their bereavement.

The fear of leaving the past behind

The fear of living the future.

We don’t want to move on, yet we want to cope with the pain. We miss our loved ones and cannot imagine loving again in the future. We cry for what we have lost, we cry for what the future holds.

But in reality the past is gone, the future is not here…all we have is now – the present. The fears belong to the past and the future, yet are affecting the present. What we need to do is use the fear…positively. Fear can act as motivation now to change our lives in the future. Fear can either cause us to freeze emotionally or it can be our adrenaline to change our mindset.

Fear is an intangible, irrational emotional state that can control us unless we learn to control it. We control it by understanding them and by facing our fears.

Lets face our fears – now – in the present, not hiding from either the past or the future.

Chris Edgar presents You Are Not Your Memories posted at Purpose Power Coaching, saying, “Many of us have felt the sensation, when we wake up in the morning, of briefly having no memory of who we are. Usually, we react to this by grasping for memories, even if they’re painful, to get our sense of identity back. However, I suggest, simply allowing that memoryless state to be for a little while can help us realize that, in our essence, we are separate from our memories. This realization helps liberate us from the stress caused by memories of painful events.”
