“The trouble with the world is that people are looking for happiness, as though it a tangible object that you will stumble across one day. With age I have found that happiness cannot be found, it starts weaving into your life like an unknown stranger when you stop looking for it. Happiness isn’t some…thing, happiness is a way of looking at the world. Happiness comes to people who see the world in all its glory, happiness comes when you enjoy what you have rather than what you haven’t got at the moment. The secret my dear is not looking for happiness but embracing what is right in front of you”

Wow, that had such a profound impact on me. Why? Because happiness was meeting her, happiness was that moment of sharing, that moment of connection. Happiness is there when we just take the time to recognise it.

Grief can blind you so much to the world around you, grief can create blinkers so you only see pain.Healing maybe arrives when you remove the blinkers and don’t fear the light because in the light is salvation from the pain ?

Leslie one of our regular commenters left a wonderfu story of how her family gave her a quote that has really helped her cope with her grief and I thought I would share it with you all
“Heal the Past, Live the Present, Dream the Future”
Don’t you think this says it all for widows and widowers ? I love the idea of healing, healing does not mean you forget it means that you cope with the pain and learn to move forward. Thanks Leslie for such a wonderful thought.

Healing and growth is no exception. In this essay I employ a system of classifying your emotions, to help you see where you are in your journey and what’s next in your evolution.”

Chris Edgar presents The Essential Breath posted at Purpose Power Coaching, saying, “When we breathe shallowly, as many of us do, and our bodies are hungry for oxygen, it’s no wonder we suffer from a nagging sense of incompleteness, a constant feeling that we need something more to make us whole. But when we completely allow our natural breathing process to operate, a feeling of peace and wholeness comes over us, and the sense that something is missing disappears.”

A downloadable poster of the quote is included.”

When someone loses someone close to them, it can be so difficult to know what to say. I came across an article at Helping Hands that I thought was worth sharing with you , here is a snippet for you

“Some other unhelpful comments after a death may be:

– “He is in a better place.” (Many feel their best place was with them.)
– “He lived a long life.” (It may not be long enough for someone we love?)
– “Be strong.” (That sounds like ‘Don’t cry, or don’t express feelings.’)
– “You should be over it by now.” (There is no timeline for grief.)

Some helpful responses may be:

– “I can’t imagine how hard this may be for you.”
– “I am so sorry about your loss.”
– “I’m here, and I can listen. Take all the time you need.”
– “Thank you for sharing your feelings.”
– “I don’t know what to say, but I want you to know I care.”

Sometimes the best thing to do is to just show up and be present. Many grievers talk about the few who knew how to be compassionate companions and simply sat patiently and quietly beside them, allowing them to experience all of their feelings and thoughts. We live in a ‘doing’ society, yet often it is in the being that we can be of the most service to others. A healing presence is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give someone in grief.”

Although we as widows or widowers are often the recipients….we also know people who suffer loss too and I found this article hugely helpful in knowing what to say to someone who is going through a bereavement.

When change happens in your life, when you are faced with grief, faced with depression, faced with loneliness…remember this line from the book, “The Psychology of Romantic Love,” Nathaniel Brandon wrote, “The first affair we must consummate successfully is the love affair with ourselves. Only then are we ready for other love relationships.”

The author Nathaniel Brandon was right – we need to be able to love ourselves, we need to be able to accept our flaws and enjoy our strengths. We can often feel alone, worthless but we are not either of those two things..we have value to bring to the world and our “humanness” is something that we should enjoy not fear.

In accepting ourselves, we make ourselves more “attractive” to other people. To find happiness again, we need to ensure that we enjoy hanging out with ourselves(!), we need to be comfortable to ensure other people are comfortable in our presence….other people’s company may not seem important at the moment, but that friendship will help you heal the pain and make you smile again.
