Sometimes I wonder when we put on the stoical face, when we smile when we are crying inside, when we say we are fine when we really want to say we feel awful – all in the name of making the other people feel better – is it OK that we are being two faced to ourselves?

Why I wonder is I can see why it is important to say all the words above

People get tired of us talking about our grief.

Depression is contagious and people try to avoid someone who is draining their energy.

To help ourselves - the more we talk about feeling better the more we trick our brain into feeling better.

But the worry for me, is that if we learn to live, hiding our true emotion then do we learn to shut down our emotion and do we learn not to listen to our own grief? Can that be dangerous? This is where I believe support groups for widows and widowers can be so helpful, as it is a safe environment to be truthful to ourselves.

In reality, I think having the “two faces” during our mourning is necessary but I don’t think we should ever start fooling ourselves at the same time.

What are your thoughts?

One of our readers Frank Burns left an in depth comment to the post The Widows Quest Grief Recipe which I wanted to share with you, in case you don’t read all of the comments. (There are some great conversations that may help you by the way!) I want to thank Frank for taking the time and sharing some wonderful words on grief. Here is his comment

“Grieving is all a part of what we’re supposed to do when tragedy strikes. It is a part of our being human that triggers this response. How we cope is not entirely left to us to decide. There are caring people in the world, even those who you may have thought didn’t care about you, are only just around the corner and they will come to you and help you through your pain.

What is important for all of us to remember in every day of our lives, is the value our loved one’s left behind for others who will never forget their actions and deeds. If we can associate our emotions to the wonderful legacies that were created, that in itself, gives us the strength to fight our demons and restore some normality back into our lives.

The pain we feel inside is brought on by sudden impact of loss.It is natural, though hard to wean out of system because we are in the transition stage of mourning. We have to embrace our emotions positively and ask ourselves where we can go from here.

Create a road map and plot out your thoughts or simply write them down.Cross off what you were able to achieve day by day and soon, you’ll notice that in your personal strength, you have the will & courage to move on. Interact with others, do not corner yourself and lock the world out from your life.Be flexible and look at what you can contribute to others who need support.

If you’re online & reading this, use the Internet and eek out resources that will drive your passion forward. Within no time to next, you’ll be amazed at how much of you the world needs. As a starter, I will recommend petey.heartheirstories.com.Read, Listen & Apply all that you possess within you and your loved one’s will be guiding you through every decision you make.God Bless.”

I value the words that people write, I value the time you all take to join in the conversation. I value the fact that you all care….I value our online friendship if that doesn’t sound silly!

I would like to draw attention to their comment about health, which is so important
While your own health may be your last concern while you are mourning a loved one, you should try to keep your physical well-being in mind by making sure you’re eating, getting some exercise and seeing a doctor if and when you need to.

Death is tragic, the loss of a loved one is one of the most painful emotions that anyone can suffer…but do you know what the real tragedy can be?

I think the real tragedy is when we don’t use our bereavement to grow as a person, when we don’t use the loss of a loved one to think about our life. Our life is precious, we are mourning the loss of someone, we should understand the amazing nature of life…..so to prevent further tragedy we must find a purpose for our life. We need to think about how we want to make the most of our lives to benefit others, we need to think about how we want to make our life worthwhile…before we take our last breath as well.

In mourning let us see that we have been given that chance to make the most of each day we have, let’s not let the pain drain that motivation from us, lets ensure that from death comes a renewed vigour to making this world a better place.

I bet you have heard the Beatles song in fact I did today and it started me thinking…..maybe it should be our theme song. Just look at the title…

Live……possibly the most difficult thing when you have lost someone. Living seems almost secondary to the pain, but we must cherish the wonderful gift of life – remember we are mourning the loss of one life, which shows how precious a life is to the human race. So we need to dig deep and learn to live again, learn to smile again and learn that we are strong enough on our own, to not only face the difficulties but to cherish the joys that are waiting, lurking for us in the future.

And Let Die…...maybe the key to it all for us. We have to let go of the past…..let go of the hope that they have not died…let go of the fact that there is nothing that we can do to change what has happened. Letting them go is hard, but in reality they have gone…they have died. Our memories live on but they are memories – they should help shape us as people but should not stop us from creating new memories and certainly not stop us from living.

It is even hard to write the words, but there is always a time that we must LIVE AND LET DIE…..

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because is happened – Jimmy loved that line, and I can now understand how well it truly fits. Life is way to short to spend it in regret. Enjoy the gift you have today fully – consume all the adventure and joy around you…. ”

I love the idea of smiling because of what you enjoyed, what you had, how you loved…..thinking about what their love gave you rather than what their death has taken away.
