In grief there is this feeling of lacking control. Someone has taken the love of your life from you and thrown at you – money worries, loneliness, emptiness, lack of purpose, lack of energy etc

I remember feeling totally out of control and sensing that I didn’t know which way to turn. If I went out – I felt sad. If I stayed in – I felt sad. I was suddenly one, or more specifically a two minus one. You know that feeling, the sense that although you are your own human being, part of your soul is missing. A couple is not two ‘ones’ but one ‘two’ – does that make sense?

When you feel out of control there is only one way out…and that is to take control one step at a time. It can be as simple as starting to pay debts on direct debit or as complex as moving house. But even small steps give you that reassurance that you can deal with grief, that you can take back the control that life snatched from you…

The answer is in the sentence….it is a feeling of being out of control not a reality

This weekend we are going to the seaside where we have placed a memorial chair looking out to sea. Dad used to spend hours with his binoculars looking at the ships going by and there was no more fitting tribute that we could think of…

It will be a sad time in one way, but Dad was always someone who loved a good story, loved a good laugh…so we try and keep that tradition alive. When I am with my mum, it seems OK but I know when I drive home I will be remembered about all the pain of grief. So what I have done is recorded his favourite upbeat songs so I can sing a long in the car…just like he used to do!

Where do you remember your loved one?

Have you noticed how the small things can really affect you on a daily basis? I am learning to cope with the loss of a partner, a friend – that coping is better on some days rather than others but in general I am slowly coming to terms with it. When I get thrown it is over the smallest things, for instance little jobs around the house or tasks that I would never have done…

One thing that I have done is to change the way that I approach the task..for instance, I have never been a decorator. I would love to be able to afford someone to come in but finances are tight. So what I did was talk to some friends, explained that I found it hard to start it as it brought back memories and also heartache at his absence. One friend then said…”Why not have a decorating party..we bring brushes and a smile and you provide the refreshment!”

Suddenly, something that seemed so sad turned into one that brought laughter. When you need to tackle something that causes you pain – see if you can approach it differently to try and help your grief.

In yesterdays positive thinking carnival there was a post from Walt on Pain is a Highly Concentrated Thought. This had a lasting effect on me especially the quote “The solution to that would be to not think so much on a bad experience, but rather if the thought comes up, think about what good it did for you.” The post goes on to say

“Remember that time when you had a headache or your foot hurt? It hurt and hurt mainly due to your concentration on the pain. But, when your focus and attention shifted to something else, the more you had your attention away from your pain, the less pain you felt!”

At first I thought….uhm hitting your foot is hardly the same as losing your loved one…and then as I started to think more about it, it is true. Look through my blog posting, it is about filling that void in your life with other things to look forward to, in this context an opportunity to move the focus of your pain onto something that creates enjoyment. As hard as it seems, the post is right. We can concentrate too hard on the pain that we are feeling and not enough on something that can create a diversion, a moment of relief. Maybe we don’t like to think of it like that, but in reality we all need to find a focus…..
