I love this Sunday night’s regular blog carnival as it gives me a lift for the wee. Today it is even more special as it would have been Dad’s 83rd birthday and he was the most positive person I have ever known. It is my mum’s birthday today, so she is staying with me and I remain so proud of the way she has coped since Dad died. Her health has not been wonderful but she is really trying to piece together a new life. She is 77 today and could so easily have said “I have nothing left to live for”. However she has

Started to play bowls.
Been on a couple of cruises – Dad didn’t really like the idea of cruises so this is a real treat for her.

I am reading a book about Eleanor Roosevelt at the moment and there are some very powerful quotations which I wanted to share with you.
“It takes courage to love, but pain through love is the purifying fire which those who love generously know.”
“We are happy together & strong relationships have to grow deep roots. We’re growing them now, partly because we are separated, the foliage and the flowers will come somehow I’m sure of it….Love is a queer thing, it hurts but it gives you so much in return.”

When we suffer grief, we need support – I know that I was desperate to “find the answer” to feeling better, finding ways of making it through that dark tunnel. I came across this list of bereavement publications that may help you come to terms with the death. For me reading was helpful for 3 reasons
1) Understanding that I was not alone, that people did understand how I felt.
2) Tips on how to cope with depression, how to move forward, how to cope with grief.
3) Support network of friends

Joan shares this tip with us all
“My husband died last year and the grief has been overwhelming. One tip I would give people, is to keep one or two items visibly on show, but don’t make the house a shrine. This had a lasting effect on me especially the quote “The solution to that would be to not think so much on a bad experience, but rather if the thought comes up, think about what good it did for you.” The post goes on to say
“Remember that time when you had a headache or your foot hurt? It hurt and hurt mainly due to your concentration on the pain. But, when your focus and attention shifted to something else, the more you …read more
