Tears Over the Love Letters

April 28, 2008 by Anna Farmery

Last night I found some old letters that I had received whilst we were going out together. I had forgotten about their existence and when I read them…..oh, I tell you my heart felt ready to explode. It was great to read about how we felt, bringing back the memories of how much in love we were…but wow, the after shock was huge.

Tears fell like waterfalls, my body felt empty, weak with emotion. I sat holding the letters and this made me wonder whether it was healthy to keep them?

What do you think? Do you keep letters and other memories that hurt you to look at? Or do you think that the time has come to let go of the memories? Would love to hear your thoughts…

I just recently lost my husband of 44 years and am struggling with all the emotions. I also came across some of our old letters and cards we had given each other over the years. I have decided to keep them, to feel the joy we shared at those times, and to pass on to our family the love that was between us. It hurt, yes. I cried for hours, but it also gave me peace knowing how much we loved each other all those years.

Jackie – I can imagine the mixture of pain and of happiness that flowed through your body. The pain of the loss, the happiness of the memories. I think it is important to keep those memories, to keep hold of that love….I love the idea of passing them on – imagine how powerful they will be for other people. Was there a verse that you loved the most?

I lost my husband of 29 years only 4 weeks ago. Those memories are so precious .Words that can never be said again.
There is no way I could ever throw them out . I know I am still in that painful spot in my life where it is just a struggle to get out of bed.
There is a reason you have them ,if it is something you could share, to help others ,then maybe it too could help heal alot of tears by alot of women that need it.

Cheri – thanks for sharing your thoughts and my heart genuinely goes out to you. I will think about it more and write more towards the end of the week – I hope my next words help.
I understand your feelings though, just seeing the handwriting makes me feel close, I think for me I have to find the balance of keeping the memories and not holding on to the past? I think my idea will be to read them again and then put them in a box in the loft once I am ready….with yours being so recent that time won’t have come for you I am sure. But let me think more and I will post later this week. Thanks for stopping by, means the world to me when people share their stories…x
