In a study on grief yearning was seen as the strongest emotion that you feel throughout the grief process. Here is a snippet of the article

I would agree with that, wouldn’t you? That yearning to turn back time, that yearning to hold them again, that yearning for the pain to subside. I try as much as possible (!) to turn my yearning into something positive. To yearn for things in the future rather than the past, after all we can manage our future we cannot do anything about the past.
